On 8/29/2024, students in Game Design, a third-year IT class for 11th and 12th graders, finished the class’s first major, “Designing a Scene”.
“The project,” explains Cameron B., an 11th Grade Game Design student, “is creating a basic point-and-click adventure game in Unity [the software used to create 3D games in Game Design] so that we can understand how to create objects, how to use cameras, and get the basic understanding of Unity.”
The major assignment graded students on their usage of objects, cameras, lighting, and audio within their first Unity project. Students were encouraged to use these aspects to show environmental storytelling, where the environment implicitly informs the user of the story and hints at available gameplay options. “My version of the project,” Cameron explains, “is inside of an office building, following an employee who stayed over late… I wanted to have a mildly eerie theme, which I feel like I’ve done well.”
Next, students will learn how to add UI buttons and basic camera animations to their projects. From there, students will add other aspects to the project until the point and click game is completed in a few weeks’ time.
