IA Base Camp Lunches Inspire Freshmen to Thrive in High School

by: Nina Toole

On September 9th, Base Camp launched its weekly lunches with a clear mission: to help freshmen connect, feel supported, and thrive as they navigate the challenges of high school. These lunches, led by dedicated 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade Base Camp leaders, are a key part of the broader “Freshman Experience,” which kicked off on August 30th.

More than just a break in the day, these gatherings are designed to foster meaningful connections between students and encourage personal growth. Through activities like High/Low/Buffalo, freshmen have the opportunity to share their highs, lows, and surprises in a safe, supportive space. The Base Camp leaders, chosen by their teachers for their leadership qualities, take time out of their schedules to help the freshmen. Their commitment reflects the core values of IA—community, mentorship, and selflessness.

By offering their wisdom and encouragement, the Base Camp leaders guide freshmen in setting both short- and long-term goals that they can continue to look back on to make the most of their high school journey.

The Base Camp lunches are more than a routine meeting—they are a testament to the strength of community and mentorship at IA. As freshmen begin to find their footing, these weekly sessions serve as a reminder that they are not alone and that they have a network of upperclassmen and peers rooting for their success. The program reflects a deep commitment to ensuring every freshman feels welcomed, valued, and ready to take on high school with confidence.
