Last Thursday, thirteen healthcare students from Innovation Academy had an extraordinary opportunity to participate in a large-scale emergency drill at Wellstar Hospital North Fulton, alongside students from Alliance Academy. The simulated disaster, a chemical explosion, required students to fully immerse themselves as mock trauma patients, adopting realistic characters and injuries created with extensive moulage makeup. From arriving by ambulance to navigating the complexities of a hospital admission, they acted out the stages of a real mass casualty event, including OR visits and, in some cases, simulated fatalities. This unique experience offered valuable, hands-on insight into crisis response and patient care, giving students an authentic glimpse into emergency medicine while helping hospital staff refine their disaster response protocols.
