Ignite Your Voice: A Journey into Public Speaking with TED

By: Arianna Edwards

As students at IA, we often find ourselves in a whirlwind of academic pressures, extracurricular commitments and social dynamics, but within this bustling environment lies an incredible opportunity for personal growth and self-expression. This year, five of our fellow high school students are stepping up to the plate, preparing to collaborate for IA’s first TedEx event and to deliver impactful speeches that will resonate beyond the walls of our school.

In this article, I had the privilege of sitting down with these brave students to explore their motivations and aspirations for participating in this unique project. I asked them a series of questions, including:

  1. What exactly inspired you to sign up for the TED collaboration? Why?-
  2. How do you believe that participating in this event will impact your personal growth? –
  3. What message do you hope to convey in your speech?
  4. Can you share any fears or challenges you anticipate feeling, and how you are going to overcome them?
  5. What advice would you give to other students who were hesitating to step out of their comfort zones?

Student A (Anonymous): “Honestly, I’ve always been terrified of speaking in front of people. My heart races just thinking about it. But when I heard about the T.E.D collab, something clicked in me. I realized that this could be my chance to face my fear, and I want to share about overcoming anxiety, and I think this platform is perfect for that. I want others to know that they aren’t alone in their struggles. It feels empowering to know that my voice could inspire someone else who’s feeling the same way I do. I signed up because I want to prove to myself that I can do this, and maybe help others find their courage too. I believe this experience will be very transformative for me. I think it will help me build confidence and resilience. Knowing that I’m sharing my truth could also help me feel connected to others, which is something I really value. But, I definitely expect to feel alot of nerves before I step on stage. I’m terrified I’ll forget my lines or stumble over my words. I also worry about how my message will be received. But I know that these challenges are part of the journey, and I’m ready to confront them.”

Student B (Anonymous): “For me, it’s about making a difference. I’ve always been passionate about environmental issues, and I truly feel like we have to take action now. When I learned about the TED awareness, I saw it as a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and bring attention to something I cared deeply about. I want my speech to echo with my classmates and encourage them to think about their impact on the planet. It’s not just about me standing up there; it’s about starting a conversation and making a change/ I believe that if I can get at least a few words out for people to think differently, it’s worth it. I signed up becauseI want to use my voice for something bigger than myself. I think participating in TED will really help me grow as a person. It’s not just about speaking, it’s about taking a stand for something I believe in. I hope to become more articulate and confident in expressing my ideas. Plus, the feedback and discussions that come from this could definitely help me refine my thoughts and become  a better advocate for the environment.

Me: That’s an amazing viewpoint! What fears or challenges do you have  as you anticipate this presentation?

Student B: I’m totally nervous about how my message will be received. What if I don’t connect with the audience? I’m really worried about the possibility of forgetting key points and not conveying my passion effectively. But I know that every time I push through these fears, I’ll become stronger and more skilled at sharing my message.”

As I dived into their prospective, I uncovered not only their individual journeys, but also the profound impact aht courage and vulnerability can have on themselves, their peers and everyone who will be watching their speeches.

So, to all students that are reading this: I encourage you to step beyond your comfort zone and consider signing up for opportunities like this. You have a voice that has the power to inspire and ignite change, not only in your life, but in the lives of others. Embrace this change to grow, connect and make a difference – because the impact of your words can ripple through your community and beyond your imagination.

We believe in you,

Arianna Edwards
