IA’s 8866 FRC robotics team held its inaugural offseason scrimmage in December. Our senior leaders replicated an FRC challenge to mimic the brainstorming, building, testing, and competition of a real, 8 week FRC build season to train and onboard 45 underclass students. The new members and promising leaders were split into three teams and were responsible for designing and building their own robots to maximize scoring and hopefully emerge victorious. Senior leaders assisted with feedback but did not do any of the work for them. On the day before winter break, we set up our FRC field and game elements in the Hangar and had a blast competing for bragging rights in front of 50+ family and friends cheering from the risers! Fortuitously, the wiffle ball challenge closely matched a real FRC season experience with plenty of challenging deadlines and ‘almost good’ ideas to overcome and provided critical hands-on experience for our members heading into our official FRC Reefscape season this semester.
