A common joke in the Model UN community is that it’s essentially cosplaying as a country. Going to conferences means researching and studying an assigned country and representing it as well as possible to pass resolutions within a specific committee.
One of these representatives, Vishnu Arumugam (11th, IT), participated in the SOCHUM (Social Humanitarian Cultures Committee) and discussed the international drug and narcotics trade and how to better control it while playing as Canada. Vishnu, through well-researched speeches, positive discussion, and a confident air in his committee, impressed the Dias, or judges, enough to net him the high honor of the verbal commendation award.
This is especially impressive considering that the award was given at the UGA Model UN Conference, considered one of the largest in the southeastern United States and the biggest since the pandemic.
When asked what’s next, he explained his vision for cultivating a passion for humanities fields through a club that would represent the non-STEM clubs at IA. He also hopes to visit the Model UN Conference at the actual Model UN building in NYC, but until then, he’ll continue to work hard for IA’s MUN.
