Students from Innovation Academy’s AVTF team recently visited Webb Bridge Middle School to lead an exciting, hands-on workshop on sound design. The middle schoolers, who were taking an AVTF-focused journalism class, had the chance to work with contact microphones, which are special mics that pick up sound by touching surfaces rather than capturing it through the air.
Once the students arrived, they split into groups and experimented with different ways to create and capture sounds. They splashed water, crushed leaves, snapped twigs, and even banged microphones against trash cans to record different effects. The students then filmed themselves making the sounds and put everything together for a “guess that sound” video challenge.
For the AVTF team, the visit was more than just a teaching opportunity; it was a rewarding experience. “It was really fun seeing the kids get excited when they realized how different everyday sounds can be when recorded up close,” Jayden Hall, an AVTF member, shared. “You could see them start thinking more creatively about how sound works in filmmaking.”
This workshop highlighted the impact of Innovation Academy’s AVTF program, which encourages students to use technology in creative ways while sharing their knowledge with others. By leading activities like this, Innovation Academy students are inspiring the next generation of filmmakers and media creators.
