This spring, the Phoenix Class of 2025 is in for a special treat. One of their own will take the stage at graduation to share heartfelt memories, celebrate their journey, and inspire everyone for what’s next.
After a highly competitive audition featuring 26 passionate and courageous seniors, the honor of delivering the 2025 Graduation Speech has been awarded to Richa Mahajan.
“The speeches we heard gave a kaleidoscopic view of the IA journey,” said Mr. Collins, English teacher and graduation speech coordinator. “Students opened up about their experiences through Robotics, Film Club, Fencing, DNA Club, the Discovery Telescope, HOSA, e-Sports—and always, the consistent excellence of our teachers and the kindness of our IA community.”
“Richa’s speech stood out for its authenticity, warmth, and reflection of what it means to be an IA Phoenix.”
Before she steps up to the mic in cap and gown, Richa took a moment out of her busy schedule to chat with me about graduation, friendship, and finding her voice.
🎤 Spotlight Interview: Richa Mahajan, 2025 Graduation Speaker
Q: How does it feel to have the opportunity to speak at graduation?
Richa: It feels epic! I get to see all my classmates in one place. It’s like seeing all my fans! (Totally kidding!) But honestly, it means a lot to be trusted to speak on behalf of our class. I’m beyond excited.
Q: What inspired you to audition?
Richa: I wasn’t going to until my friend Diya Phadke told me, “Richa, you have to do this!” That encouragement pushed me. I just wanted to share the joy of graduating and celebrate the friendships I’ve made here.
Q: Without spoiling the surprise, what can we expect from your speech?
Richa: So many memories! I tried to write something that reflects all of us, our shared moments, our struggles, and our community. The main theme is connection.
Q: How has IA shaped you? Any unforgettable moments?
Richa: Honestly, it’s the people. The community here has helped me grow so much. Even the small class moments and quick hallway chats are unforgettable. At IA, the little things become the big things.
Q: Was there a teacher or class that nudged you toward auditioning?
Richa: Mr. Collins introduced the opportunity, and thinking back to his AP Language class made me realize this was something I wanted to try.
Q: What was the selection process like?
Richa: You fill out a form, and then audition in front of Ms. Armstrong and Mr. Collins. It was surprisingly chill low pressure, but still a little nerve-wracking!
Q: What’s been the most fun or stressful part of preparing?
Richa: Calling my friends at night and asking for feedback—it was chaotic, but fun! It reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing support system.
Q: How does it feel knowing your words will be heard by classmates, teachers, and family?
Richa: Unreal! I actually thought about surprising my parents, but I couldn’t keep the secret that long. I’m just really honored to share this moment with the people who helped shape me.
Q: Any advice for underclassmen dreaming of giving the graduation speech someday?
Richa: Know your class. Think about what made your journey special. Speak from the heart—and speak for everyone.
Q: What themes or lessons from IA will definitely show up in your speech?
Richa: Perseverance, community, and balance. Those three things have defined my high school experience.
Q: Has the IA community influenced how you wrote your speech?
Richa: Definitely. This community has lifted me up in every way. You’re nothing without the people who support you.
Q: What’s next after graduation? Any future in public speaking?
Richa: Probably not a career in public speaking, but after this, I’ll definitely feel more confident next time I have to talk to a big crowd!
