On Friday, March 28th, Innovation Academy’s Health Science students led an unforgettable Flex Friday event—Save-A-Life, a large-scale, immersive disaster drill simulating a mock chemical explosion. Designed and executed entirely by the IA Health Science team with support from our incredible community business partners, this hands-on experience introduced students to the fast-paced world of healthcare and emergency response.
The morning kicked off with specialized workshops, where students trained for their designated roles. From 911 dispatchers and first responders to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and lab technicians, each participant learned the critical responsibilities their role would demand during the drill.
In the afternoon, the scenario unfolded. Students began on the field as patients and responders, quickly transitioning into IA General Hospital, a fully transformed section of the school. Receiving nurses triaged patients, while attending and specialty physicians worked up cases, ordering imaging, labs, medications, and consults to determine treatment plans. This year, a decontamination tent station was introduced for the first time, adding another layer of realism to the event.
More than just a drill, Save-A-Life was designed to spark interest in healthcare careers, enhance teamwork and communication skills, and, most importantly, make learning fun! The event was a testament to the dedication of IA’s Health Science team, whose meticulous planning ensured a thrilling and educational experience for all involved.
Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this event—we can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year’s Save-A-Life!
