Do you ever feel like you never know what’s going on? Fear not, because SLC’s rolled out some real big
changes for this year to make sure you’re in the loop and getting the most out of student life (yes, even at
IA).
What is SLC, anyway?
The Student Leadership Committee combines Club Council and Student Council into one team dedicated to everything student life. This means planning events, promoting clubs, organizing fundraisers, and making sure students’ voices are heard. In fact, straight from Ms. Paxton (Club Council Teacher Lead) we’ve gotten to know that this year, instead of having 20-30 Student Council members per grade, there are just four representatives per grade so that meetings can be more focused and efficient.
Clubs, clubs, and more clubs
With over 130 clubs and more than 1,500 seats to fill, Club Council makes sure every single student here
at IA can get into their club or study hall at the right time. They handle countless club requests, check
club sponsors, and basically manage the heaps of logistics behind the club system at IA. Club council
goes above and beyond to devote hours and hours into promoting fundraising and student life events like
Skelebration. Their efforts eventually go into prizes given like those during the lunch-time games (e.g.,
Jeopardy) and larger scale prizes (e.g., the most proactive club at IA).
Big Changes for Freshmen
With several involved seniors graduating, there are plenty of opportunities for new leadership. Freshmen
can get involved through their grade’s Student Council and connect with SLC representatives. And if
you’re looking to directly join SLC, applications for certain positions are coming soon – so keep an eye
on Canvas and Outlook.
One United Front
Last year, student leadership was split into separate teams of student leaders. Now, SLC is working as one
big group of communicative leaders who represent different parts of the diverse student population at IA.
And now, through the IA Leadership Program (affiliated with SLC), student leaders meet monthly with
the principal to bring up concerns from peers, share ideas, and find ways to make student life better.
In the past, communication breakdowns meant some students didn’t even know how to get involved. In an
interview with Srishti Agrawal, a senior SLC member, she highlighted the fact that “SLC is focusing on clear communication and making sure no one misses out on student life just because they go to a school
with an ‘academics-only reputation.’”
What’s next? Expect more club events, more student input, and a smoother system for everything from fundraisers (like last year’s Valentine’s sale) to dances like Homecoming and Prom. As SLC puts it, the goal is simple: push and promote student life so every student feels represented, connected, and heard.
