In the healthcare pathway, there are a total of 11 courses available to students. This includes surgical-tech. The purpose of surgical tech is to train and prepare students to become surgical technicians, assist surgeons in making sure the surgery goes well, teaches tool and equipment terminology, how to set up an OR for surgery as well as how to sterilize the surgical field. This is exactly why students are currently working on an OR diorama which is a three-dimensional miniature or life-size representation of a surgical
setting with Dr. Dawes. Dr. Dawes says, “Students first do a sketch and then research in order to make 3D models.” After answering research questions, students construct a 3D model of a surgical operating room inside a shoebox. The goal is to accurately depict the layout, equipment, personnel, and sterile vs. non-sterile zones in a real OR.
This sets students up for the future and gives them some insight into what working in an OR looks
like. Dr. Dawes states, “The reason for building an OR diorama is to help students learn where things go, who is in the sterile or non-sterile, and allow them to be creative.” Students were able to artistically create 3D models using materials such as clay, play dough, wooden stickers, paper, Legos, cardboard, etc. This project gave students the perfect opportunity to successfully replicate the OR and give students an idea of what exactly the environment looks like as a surg. technician while also giving them the room to
explore their imagination and think innovatively.
