The bittersweet farewell of IA’s seniors is a huge deal. The school year is packed with events to celebrate and honor their time here, and one of the most memorable traditions is senior portraits. Here’s what you should know about them.
Mrs. Scenna, our yearbook director details, “You just have to bring yourself to your senior portrait! Cady will provide a cap and gown, as well as a tux or drape for you so you don’t need to worry about getting those items ahead of time.” Luckily, portrait scheduling is simple: students can book online at cadystudios.com and choose a studio location, or register for the on-campus session at IA on Oct. 10. Seniors should also be aware that the final deadline to have portraits taken is Nov. 3. “Cady will do most of the work here,” the teacher added. “You just have to look your best and let them do the rest! They’re going to tell you to do all kinds of awkward poses, but I swear the pictures always come out looking so nice.” Overall, the memo is to show up prepared, look your best, and let the photographers do their job.
Some may also fail to realize the full importance of senior portraits. “Your senior portrait is something you can look back on in 10, 20, 30 years,” Mrs. Scenna explained. Families also view them as an important keepsake. “Many people send senior portraits to grandparents, aunts, and uncles because they’re proud of your accomplishments–your portrait represents that.”
From a student’s perspective on what to expect, Kai Fonseca [12] reflected on what they wish they had known before picture day. “I didn’t take into account the full quality,” she explained. “It’s a full body shot, so get that hair done, make sure you look good.” Beyond appearance, the student emphasized that senior portraits are an investment, and students should feel comfortable making sure they get their money’s worth. “If you don’t like the pictures, say something, because their pictures are so expensive. You have to make sure you get your money’s worth. I’ve heard so many people say, ‘I hate my pictures.’ Then why did you pay $200 for it? If you don’t like it, speak up.” These are essential tips to get pictures you’ll be proud of.
Senior portraits aren’t the only way students will be highlighted this year. The yearbook team is already preparing to honor class of 2026. “Yearbook is very excited to make this year’s senior section just as cool as last year’s,” said Mrs. Scenna. The team will soon be rolling out details on senior superlatives, quotes, and connections, so seniors should be ready to participate. “We’ll be putting out information very soon, so stay tuned for that on the Class of 2026 canvas page!” With so many things upcoming, this year’s seniors have much to look forward to!
