In September, All Kinds of History hosted a memorial event on the twenty-fourth anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11. When students walked to the front entrance of the school that morning, they passed dozens of flags spread across the front lawn, with each flag symbolizing the lives lost in the terrorist attack on American ground. Much effort was made in order to effectively plan the event, with the club working with Ms. Paxton and the student volunteers of the PTSO in both organizing the event and setting up the memorial itself. Through much rigor and perseverance, the memorial was able to be successfully put into action.
Now, why is this event significant? Why should you care? Well coming from the words of Ryan James, the president of the All Kinds of History club, they “wanted the memorial to stick with people and make them remember that 9/11 was a day of tragedy and heroism.” As the event happened before any of the students at IA were born, we aren’t able to truly grasp the devastation of the event to those who lost parents, children, friends, and family in the tragedy. Especially now, on social media, people often make jokes about 9/11, downplaying the event but not realizing how big of an impact that day really was. The memorial was meant to, according to the club, “reconnect us with those who were lost that day.”
The All Kinds of History Club hosts several events much like the 9/11 one, with some being for memorial while others just for pure enjoyment. As a matter of fact, the club plans to host a game of History Jeopardy for the entire school during lunches, so keep your eyes peeled for it on the Student Life Weekly!
