Student Voices at TEDx IA: Reflecting on Growth, Impact, and Innovation

By Anaiya Patel

Innovation Academy announces and introduces it’s very own TedX event for the year of 2026. A TEDx event is a locally organized, independent event inspired by the TED format that brings people together in communities around the world to share ideas through liver speakers. The TedX event opens new doors for students to speak their mind and share their thoughts about important topics that fit the selected and designated theme each year. A TEDx event at Innovation Academy offers students a wide range of opportunities to develop and showcase their skills, engage with the community, and amplify their own innovative ideas. The purpose of this event is to inspire, connect, and communicate their community. The event will be held in February, and this is officially IA’s second year of doing the event.

The theme for this year is Flipside- New Angles, New Answers. Last year’s theme was The Spark: From a Flicker to a Flame. Kindness Mbaimbai(12) was a speaker for the first TedX event in 2025. She states, “Being on stage, totally felt nerve-racking. It felt intimate as well because of what I was talking about. My speech was about how I came from an environment, where I didn’t understand that jewelry making was truly my identity to then coming to a place where jewelry making is the only way I can connected to my identity.” She also says, “I was nervous and strangely confident because of the speech I had prepared and the story I was going to to share with my peers about my culture, my heritage, and who I am. I did have a lot of thoughts of anxiety. I would say because I was afraid that people would not be able to connect to what I was saying and be able to understand that community doesn’t mean one singular thing.” The most important thing to keep in mind when speaking to an audience is that they are here for you. They are here to hear you speak. So shake off your nerves, grab that mic, and speak your heart out.

It may not seem like much but coming together as a community matters. Connecting matters. Ideas matter. Ethics matter. Creativity matters. It all matters so even if you feel as though it’s pointless and it’s irrelevant, just know that it will reach people. If you are able to connect with at least one person than you’ve done your job. Kindness states, “People were very impressed with my speech and people came up and hugged me, came up and gave me praise and spoke about what community meant to them and how they would go and find or help other people join into their communities.” The TEDx event is more than just a platform to talk, it’s about sharing your experiences, making connections, building community, and strengthening morale. Kindness also says, “I would say to anybody who wants to do this next year is that in your speech/story give a new perspective of who you are, a perspective that people don’t often see or know of. I would say that try to make a impact with your story and don’t limit your ideas on what your story could potentially be.” All in all, the TedX event is a gateway for students to be able to speak on repeating issues, significant consequences, detrimental environmental impacts, and overall relevant and meaningful opinions, thoughts, beliefs, and values in society.
