It’s that time again at Innovation Academy — Club Week. Once every few weeks, the school shifts its schedule to make room for club meetings during the school day. While it’s meant to help students stay involved without juggling after-school commitments, not everyone agrees on whether the trade-off is worth it.

In the past, IA used a block day schedule where classes were split between two days and were 90 minutes long. Whereas, now we follow an altered club week schedule for the entire week where all normal classes are taken each day in addition to one 45-minute time period dedicated to club time.
Mr. Bart, a math teacher who has taught at IA for the past four years, shared that “the Club Week schedule, [like its predecessor, Block Days], does not really interrupt class planning.” Shorter periods and rearranged days may shift pacing a little, but some teachers see it as a small change for a good cause.
Students, on the other hand, have mixed feelings. Netra Suraj-Meena [11] noted, “It feels like every week has a different schedule, and it’s quite hard to keep track of.” Many students found it simpler with the block week schedule last year when only two days were altered. Suraj-Meena [11] added that “the 90-minute block day class periods also made it easier for longer tests and labs that take time to complete and clean up.”
For now, IA students and teachers are learning to adapt (and maybe double-check their Canvas calendars a little more often). Whether Club Week becomes an IA staple or not, it’s definitely made school days a little less predictable.
