October Club Spotlight: Hindu YUVA

By: Claire Wang

Innovation Academy has hundreds of outstanding clubs, however this month, Hindu YUVA has done something spectacular. On October 10th, Hindu YUVA hosted its own Garba event that was widely successful with dozens of attendees. Guests participated in dances, worship, and had a great time exploring a cultural tradition while hanging out with friends from school.

Garba, for those who are unfamiliar with the term, is a popular Gujarati folk dance from India that is primarily performed during Navratri, a Hindu festival dedicated to the goddess Durga. The word, “Garba,” symbolizes the cycle of life, and participants move around a central image of the Goddess Durga, representing the divine energy in all living beings. As the dance is a joyful one, dancers often wear colorful and traditional Indian clothing. Altogether, it paints the picture of an energetic tradition that brings people together.

This event helped spread awareness of a beautiful tradition and also celebrate one of the many unique cultures in our community. The Innovation Academy student body is made up of several different demographics, and to be able to celebrate each other’s customs is a wonderful way to broaden one’s view of people of different cultures. The Hindu YUVA club hosts many events and activities like this per year. If you’re interested, visit the Hindu YUVA club in Block A.
