Why Storytelling is an Important Skill

By: Tommy Steimer

Whether you are in IT, healthcare, or engineering, there is one skill that is important to know regardless of your field of work. That skill is storytelling. Everyone loves a good story… Whether it is through a video game, podcast, book, D&D game, movie, or television show, there is almost something for everyone! Stories can be elaborate, complex, and highly metaphorical, which is why many details or plot points can often fly right over someone’s head. Senior student Charlie Cox says, “I think storytelling has more importance beyond the simple giving and sharing of stories. I think it’s so common all over the world because it’s one of the deepest ways you can connect strangers, to have them both connect to a story. It’s something humans have had be central to our interactions for all of time, and as humans connect more and more, it only becomes more common.” In order to tell a good story, it is often important to learn how to understand them to the best level. How would you do that? Well, Innovation Academy has many classes to help break apart, interpret, and produce stories. If you are looking to tell stories via video, consider taking AVTF. If you want to break apart, analyze, and write stories, consider taking dramatic writing honors. Finally, if you just like to experience stories, consider joining D&D club or Film study club. So go forth, and chase the stories YOU want to tell!
