Pluribus Pilot Premiere (spoilers ahead)
Happiness is contagious. At face value, this is a completely normal phrase that means no harm. What if I told you that this is the tagline to an apocalypse show? Creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Vince Gilligan, released the first two episodes of his brand new show Plurbius to Apple TV last week. In the show, humans discover a signal broadcasting to Earth from 600 light-years away that has been broadcasting for thousands of years. They decode it and learn that it is a chemical combination. A recipe. Turns out it is a recipe for a virus that turns all of humanity into one joyous non-lethal hivemind that spreads through kissing and through the air. Among the eleven people on earth uninfected, Carol, who wrote award-winning romance novels, is the only person who is unhappy and realizes that this is a problem. There is no human on Earth with individuality, creativity, or free will. It is only the infected serving the uninfected so they can “join us”. Lead Actor playing Carol, Rhea Seehorn says, “This is a show that falls forward, rather than backwards. Every episode just gets better and better.” It’s no wonder why critics are calling this the “best TV pilot of all time”. No one (including Vince Gilligan) knows what this show is a commentary on. Is it a commentary on individuality? Everyone falling in line on social media? The pandemic? What’s your take? Go watch the Plurbius Premiere on Apple TV.
