IA Fencing Team: A Community of Fencers and Friends

By Poorvi Roopesh and Anaiya Patel

Allez! The IA Fencing Team is one of the few sports at our school but they are incredibly dedicated and passionate for the sport of fencing. The team provides athletes at Innovation Academy with the opportunity to learn and grow as athletes. The club welcomes fencers of all skill levels from complete beginners to experienced competitors. In Georgia high schools, fencing is considered a club activity rather than a sanctioned sport. Fencing at IA is more about having a fun time and training.

Nyal Khan (11) said that the “IA fencing community is one of the best actual communities itself. This year, we are mainly focusing on getting better, but at the eye of the community, we’re also one big friend group, and we all care about each other.”

Fencing is a fast-paced sport that developed from sword fighting, where two people face off using lightweight swords to score points. It’s a highly technical sport that relies on speed, strength, precision, and quick reactions, while also demanding strategy and focus. The En Garde position is the stance fencers take at the start of each round, and it’s crucial to how they fight. It provides balance and control, letting them move smoothly, defend effectively, and launch attacks at the right moment. Without it, a fencer would be slower, less stable, and more vulnerable to their opponent.

The IA fencing team has six tournaments every year and students train by running and stretching. They also train and practice every Thursday at IA.
They have another tournament in two weeks. IA Fencing competes against approximately 25 other Atlanta area schools as part of the Georgia High School Fencing League. Practices begin at the start of the fall semester and continue through February, while tournaments run from September to February, averaging one or two events per month.

IA Fencing Coach Bill Donges says, “The team is really improving and each individual has their own speed. IA fencers are really getting along by encouraging each other and explaining tactics.”

The IA fencing team brings athleticism, passion, and drive to our school. With their regular practices and training we are all rooting for our IA fencing team to bring in another win!
