As the year winds down and winter break approaches, Thanksgiving gave us a moment to take a break from school stressors and appreciate what really matters. Even though the holiday has already passed by now, the feeling of gratitude is still in the air. If you’ve walked down IA’s hallways, you’ve definitely seen him before, Mr. Timothy Harvey. When asked what he’s thankful for this year, he stated “I’m thankful for life, my family, and this job. I love this school,” he said. “When I first started, I thought it was going to be a bit of a challenge, but I love building relationships with the children and the staff. It kind of feels like home because I know so many of the kids. I know almost every kid in this school probably by name all 1,500 kids. They know me, I know them.”
When asked what Mrs. Susan Rickson the front office is thankful for she said, “I am definitely most thankful for my three kids.” “And I’m thankful for my home and my job and my health.” Her appreciation extends into her work life as well. “I love my coworkers. I love my job duties. And my commute is only 10 minutes. I’ll be thankful for that forever.” She shows gratitude in her everyday interactions. “Well, I’m a hugger. I’m thankful for all my friends, and I always hug them and compliment them.”
Victoria Hill [9] and Mishi[9] brought a different perspective. Victoria commented, “I’m thankful for my new friends that I met this year.” Mishi shared the same thoughts too, she stated, “I’m thankful for all the new friends I’ve made throughout this year and also at IA, and for my family.” What makes IA feel like a place worth appreciating? According to Victoria, it’s the people. “There’s a lot of nice people,” she said. “People are interested in different things, but everyone’s really nice. And I’m learning a lot of different topics at once.” As different as their stories are, everyone shared at least one thing they’re appreciative of, big or small.
