Zootopia 2: The Sequel We Didn’t Know We Needed

By Siddarth Suresh

I bet most of you have seen the original Zootopia. When it came out back in 2016, it blew up way more than anyone expected. A tenacious bunny teaming up with a slick, slightly shady fox didn’t sound like the most obvious duo, but somehow it clicked. The movie crushed it at the box office and quickly wormed its way into everyone’s hearts.

Now Disney’s back with a sequel, Zootopia 2, which was released over Thanksgiving break, almost a decade after the original. This time, we pick up with the main duo Judy and Nick after their picture-perfect ending from the first movie has started to crack. Their partnership isn’t as smooth as it once was, and the tension between them feels real in a way that makes the story hit a little harder. While they’re working through all of that, they get pulled into a new case involving an illegal snake gallivanting around Zootopia, and the investigation ends up forcing them to question the very city they’ve sworn to protect.

What makes the sequel interesting is how personal it feels. Instead of just running around solving crimes, Judy and Nick spend a lot of time figuring out why their partnership is falling apart and what they actually mean to each other. At the same time, the movie digs deeper into how Zootopia works as a society, showing cracks beneath the shiny surface that the first movie didn’t fully explore.

Online critics have already been calling this movie a wild success, with some even saying it outshines the original. IA students also agree; Sreya Donthineni (11) says, “Watching the movie meant a lot to me because it really deepened the world of Zootopia while still paying homage to the original.” Whether you agree or not is up to you, but the only way to find out is to watch it yourself. If you’ve got some free time and want to relive a little bit of your childhood, head to the theater and check out Zootopia 2 while it’s still playing.
