Research at Innovation Academy is a department with a strong tradition of encouraging students to explore and pursue their passions. Although the class is typically reserved for juniors and seniors, Innovation Academy recognizes the importance of early preparation. As Mr. Robinson, head of the Research Department, explained, “Research at Innovation Academy can be pretty rigorous for most juniors, so we want sophomores to be adequately prepared for the rigor.”
To support this goal, the school has introduced the required Pinnacle Prep sessions, which help sophomores build foundational research skills and gain confidence before beginning the full program in their junior year. Mr. Robinson added, “This year, we want to format Pinnacle Prep to be hands-on to ensure that sophomores realize how hands-on their own research can be next year.”
This year’s Pinnacle Prep sessions, which are held on various Flex Fridays throughout the year, include practical activities such as pipetting, microscopy, and colorimetry. These exercises aim to give sophomores a solid introduction to laboratory techniques and research thinking. As students attend their first session today, the Innovation Academy community looks forward to seeing them take their first steps into the world of research.
