Early Action Doesn’t Mean Final Decision

By Siddarth Suresh
By now, many of our seniors at IA have received their early-action or early-decision college results. For those who applied to in-state public schools such as UGA and GT, the admissions committees have released decisions. Some students learned that they were accepted. Others were deferred or denied. Whoever you are and however you feel, it is okay.
If you opened that acceptance letter, you probably felt a rush of relief and excitement. You might already be sharing the news with close friends or family. For some, it feels like the first step toward a much-anticipated chapter of an educational journey.

If your application was deferred or denied, you might be faced with disappointment or uncertainty. You might wonder what comes next or feel discouraged. That reaction is completely valid. Many students before you have been in that same place and have found success through regular decision or alternate plans.
Whatever your result, you still have time and options. You can review your other college applications. You can meet with your advisor and trusted adults to explore gap-year opportunities and different kinds of schools. You can take a breath and give yourself space to feel whatever arises. You don’t need to decide your whole future today, and your whole future isn’t decided by today. In fact, as IA senior Kindness Mbaimbai (12) noted, “You control the next four years of your life. Don’t let a piece of paper define that for you.”
As a school community, we stand together. Help a friend celebrate. Offer support to someone who is struggling inside. Keep your chins up and your spirits high. No matter what your early-action result says, today marks a moment of growth.
