IA Students Shine at National Film & Television Competition in Tampa

What does it take to write, film, and edit a video — all in a matter of hours — while competing against more than 3,600 students from across the country and Europe? Just ask the Audio Video Technology and Film (AVTF) and Video Journalism students at Innovation Academy. They found out firsthand this past weekend when they traveled to Tampa, Florida to compete in the Student Television Networks (STN) national video competition.

The weekend kicked off with an exciting Amazing Race-style challenge, sending students racing through the area exploring the Tampa convention center before the real competition began. It was a fun way to break the ice, build team energy, and get ready for the intense days ahead.

Competing Under Pressure — and Loving It

STN competitions are no joke. Students received prompts on the spot and had to write scripts, film footage, and edit their final videos — all within tight time limits. Categories ranged from silent film to vertical man-on-the-street interviews, and every team had to bring their creative A-game from start to finish.

The competition was fierce. But so was our IA team.

IA Takes the Stage — and the Trophy

Not to be outdone, the vertical man-on-the-street team: Jayden, Alik, and Ethan earned an Honorable Mention, a top-5 finish! We couldn’t be more proud of every student who showed up, competed hard, and represented Innovation Academy with excellence.

The highlight of the weekend came when IA’s commercial competition team: Ian, Sebastian, and Zach won 1st place and got to take the stage in front of thousands of their peers. That moment was the result of real skill, creative thinking, and the ability to perform under pressure — exactly what the AVTF program trains students to do.

Why Every IA Student Should Consider AVTF

You might be thinking: AVTF sounds cool, but what does filmmaking have to do with my future?  The answer might surprise you. Whether you’re planning to become an engineer, a doctor, a programmer, or a lawyer, the ability to communicate your ideas clearly and powerfully is one of the most valuable skills you can have.

AVTF teaches students how to be storytellers. It builds confidence, creativity, and the ability to work as a team — all while learning real-world technical skills like video production, editing, and media design. These are the kinds of skills that make you stand out, no matter what path you choose.

Students returned from Tampa with more than just awards — they came back with new friendships, a deeper respect for deadlines, and a serious case of excitement for next year’s competition.
