Can you imagine a class that teaches you how to film, edit, and most importantly turn your creative storylines into reality? Here in IA, we have a class dedicated to helping students accomplish their filmmaking goals. Audio Video Technology & Film (AVTF) is a year‑long course that gives students hands‑on experience in filmmaking, editing, and media production while working on real projects for the school. The schools has a variety of equipment’s that students can utilize to make their film or media.
Throughout the year, students spend much of their time filming and editing videos. Daily activities often include filming, producing content for the school’s IATV channel and editing. Students learn how to frame shots, capture good‑quality audio, and edit videos in an engaging way for others to watch.
Andrew French stated, “It’s a really fun class, and it teaches you a lot about editing, creativity, and making scripts. My favorite segment is The Andrew Show, which is a show all about me!”

One of the most exciting parts of AVTF is participating in the Futon Film Festival, a statewide competition where students create videos based on a prompt and compete against other school districts. Preparing for the festival involves long filming sessions, storyboarding, scripting, and editing. This is a great opportunity for all AVTF students to showcase their work. AVTF also needs strong teamwork. Film projects require collaboration amongst others. Students learn how to communicate ideas clearly, share responsibilities, and meet deadlines, gaining skills that apply even without a camera in hand.

David Ash shared, “I like AVTF mainly because I can just work on a bunch of film projects and film what I like.”
Students like having the freedom to choose what they want to film and how they want to accomplish their work. This gives students the ability to make fun engaging videos for everyone to enjoy!
Overall, AVTF is more than just a film class it’s an opportunity to gain hands‑on film making experience, develop teamwork skills, and bring creative ideas to life.
