IA Biotechnology Discovers 11 New Phages and Assembles Phage Genome

Biotechnology Essentials students discovered 11 new bacteriophages as part of their project-based learning centered around antimicrobial resistance. Each lab team was successful in isolating, growing and purifying their phage viruses. The phages were sent for electron microscope imaging at UGA and will be sent to the University of Pittsburgh’s phage library. These phages will be stored for potential future use for research or therapy.

Two Biotechnology Research students (Bridget Flynn and Anish Kelam) completed their assembly and annotation of over 85 genes in their phage genome. Their final genomic map will be published in GenBank and they will receive publishing credit. This is the culmination of a 3-year project that took them from discovering the phage, isolating it, having it sequenced, annotation and assembly. Information of their phage can be found here: https://phagesdb.org/phages/Twigg/
