On February 26, Innovation Academy hosted Flipside, a TED Talk style event designed to embolden and empower students to share their ideas. The evening created a space where voices that are not always heard in the classroom could take center stage. From personal reflections to niche passions, each speaker brought a different perspective that highlighted the diversity of thought and “ideas worth spreading” within IA.

Mr. Robinson, one of the sponsors of the event, explained the purpose of the event, saying, “Being a STEM magnet school, students at our school often have ample room to grow and share their passions for STEM, but we wanted to use this event to give students freedom to share their other experiences and opinions.” The topics reflected that freedom. One student explored the surprisingly complex world of sea slugs, turning an overlooked marine animal into a lesson on adaptation and resilience. Another speaker discussed the feeling of boredom, reframing it not as a weakness but as a catalyst for imagination and growth. Each presentation demonstrated how even the most ordinary ideas can become compelling when paired with passion and authenticity. Sreepadha Daram (12), a student leader for the event, echoed this sentiment and noted, “Every speaker on the stage spoke with passion about their topics, and it was really cool to see students taking advantage of such a global platform like TEDx.”

More than just a speaking event, Flipside showcased the power of student voice at IA. It reminded the audience that innovation does not only happen in labs or classrooms. Sometimes, it begins with a student brave enough to step onto a stage and share a story.
