The Governor’s Honors Program returns this summer for its 63rd year at Georgia Southern University, continuing a long tradition of academic enrichment for some of Georgia’s most driven high school students. Designed for rising sophomores and juniors, GHP offers an immersive experience across a wide range of subjects, from STEM disciplines to communicative arts, theater, and world languages, which are referred to as “majors” within the program. Over several weeks, students step outside the traditional classroom and into an environment built for exploration and deeper learning.

Admission into GHP is highly selective, requiring multiple rounds of applications and interviews. Students must demonstrate not only academic excellence but also a deep, genuine passion for their chosen field. This rigorous process ensures that those selected are deeply committed to learning and ready to engage in an intensive academic setting alongside equally motivated peers.
Beyond academics, GHP offers something less tangible but just as meaningful: connection. Students are surrounded by other high schoolers from across Georgia who share their curiosity and enthusiasm, creating a space where intellectual conversations and friendships develop naturally. The program also features a variety of “minors,” which change each year and allow students to explore interests outside their primary field, ranging from activities like Australian soccer to crocheting. These experiences help create a balanced environment that meshes rigorous curriculum with community-oriented creativity.
This year, IA junior Kavya Rajan [11] was selected as part of the 63rd cohort in the biology major. Reflecting on her acceptance, she shared, “I’m really passionate about biology, and getting to meet peers from across Georgia is going to be really exciting. I can’t wait!” Her enthusiasm captures the idea that GHP for many students offers a chance to grow academically while forming meaningful connections with others who share similar passions.
To sum up, as the 63rd Governor’s Honors Program approaches, it stands out as a chance for students to explore their passions, connect with like-minded peers, and grow beyond the classroom. It’s a summer they’ll certain to remember long after it ends.
