How to Prepare for the SAT

The SAT is an important and highly anticipated test that juniors and seniors take during the fall. Students that signed up for it in time were able to take the SAT here at IA on October 8th. However, if you didn’t take it yet and are planning to in November or later in the year, how should you study for it?

Izi Pritchett, a senior who took the SAT, stated “I studied with the SAT book. There’s this Big book that I got on Amazon, which is really awesome and very helpful. I use that to study the language and the math.” Izi went the traditional route to study, but what if you didn’t study at all?

Annalisa Fletcher, a senior who took the SAT, did just that. “I have like a thing where if I study I am getting more stressed about it, so I just don’t study at all.”  She explained “I just like walk in and pray a lot.” But seniors aren’t the only ones who aren’t studying for this test.

Amalie Coss, a Junior who took the PSAT, also didn’t study stated “I didn’t really study, I did the practice in class. We went over a lot of stuff that they would talk about, but I didn’t do it on my own at all.” Not studying is a common strategy for many students, but for this test, that strategy proved to be flawed.

“I just wish studied more of the terminology for math because it was like, what’s the median of this? “Amalie explained. “I forgot which one median was and stuff like that… and we did it like 2 years ago, so I was like, I’ve never had to do this.” In similarity, Annalisa stated “I actually did wish that I did like go over vocab a bit because I was a bit confused on a lot of the words.”

On the other hand, people who did study just regret not being prepping for comfort. Izi stated, “I probably should have worn more layers funny enough because the room’s really cold and cold distracts your brain, so probably more warm layers.”  Many will tell you, comfort it key to preventing distractions and keeping you focused.

Normally, not studying can be an applicable strategy for regular some tests, but for the SAT and ACT, studying is highly recommended. Many students end up regretting spending time preparing for the test, whether that is for core material, vocab, or just bringing a water bottle and jacket. All in all, the SAT is a test you should prepare for both mentally and physically for maximum focus and comfort.
