Is There Room for Artistic Creativity at Innovation Academy?

By Srishti Sawant

Innovation Academy builds its identity around CTAE pathways and a strong emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math. This focus prepares students for technical careers, but it also raises an important question for many students: what role do the arts play in a STEM-centered school?

Innovation Academy does not offer a full music or performing arts program such as band, orchestra, or chorus. The school follows a CTAE model, so administrators prioritize career-focused classes and hands-on STEM experiences when they design schedules and allocate resources. This structure limits the space available for traditional arts programs.

Despite these limitations, students at Innovation Academy continue to pursue artistic interests. Many students balance STEM coursework with creative activities through clubs, personal practice, or programs outside of school. Junior Sunwoo Jung [11], who plays the violin, shared his perspective on the situation.

“I play violin. I do wish our school had an orchestra, but I think there are still opportunities to pursue musical interests. I’m in the music club and I’ve been able to play violin in a small ensemble. However, I also participate in orchestras outside of school. Also, I hope IA will create a music program in the future.”

Sophomore Arshia Rampuria [10], a pianist, offered a different but related perspective on artistic opportunities at the school.

“In essence, I believe we do have multiple opportunities through IA, whether that be through participating in IA’s classes, shows, and even class assignments. With that in mind though, it is an individual pursuit,” Rampuria said.

She explained that she continues to play piano because she enjoys it and appreciates that the school provides access to instruments, even within a STEM-focused environment.

Rampuria also described a unique experience that connected her musical interests with the school community. She performed piano in the lobby for the Metropolitan Ballet event hosted annually at the school, an opportunity introduced by a teacher.

“If you want to get good at what you enjoy, you absolutely have to pursue it outside of school and dedicatedly,” Rampuria said. “So, I do believe that while IA does support artistic passions, the real question is whether you are willing to pursue them yourself.”

These perspectives highlight a common theme among students. Interest in the arts remains strong, but students often take personal responsibility for developing their skills. Clubs such as the music club give students opportunities to collaborate and perform, although these experiences differ from structured classes or school-sponsored ensembles. Many students who feel passionate about the arts seek additional opportunities outside of school to continue developing their abilities.

However, not all students can access outside programs. Transportation, cost, and time commitments can limit participation. As a result, some students may find it difficult to explore artistic interests without in-school options. This concern highlights a gap between student interest and available resources.

At the same time, many students and educators support the school’s current focus. They believe Innovation Academy’s commitment to CTAE pathways allows students to gain valuable experience that traditional schools may not offer. Expanding arts programs could require changes to scheduling, staffing, and funding, which could affect the school’s primary mission.

The discussion at Innovation Academy reflects a larger conversation about the relationship between STEM and the arts. Students continue to express interest in creative opportunities, while the school maintains its focus on career and technical education. As the school evolves, students and staff may explore ways to support both priorities.

For now, students at Innovation Academy take initiative to keep the arts present in their lives. They create opportunities through clubs, outside programs, and personal dedication, showing that creativity remains an important part of the student experience.
