October Club Spotlight: SODA (Student Organ Donation Advocates)

By: Claire Wang

Happy Spooky Month Innovation Academy families! This October has been the busiest by far, not only hosting Homecoming (check out the IA Student Life Instagram for HoCo posts) and Skelebration, but also several club events such as musical showcases after school and ping pong events during lunches. In the spirit of Halloween, I would like to mention the zombie appearances in our hallways, murmuring about craving brains. Just kidding, zombies aren’t real, but the desire for organs certainly are. The Student Organ Donation Advocates, also known as SODA, helps educate students about the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donations while empowering them to take action in their own communities.

Recently, SODA hosted Cookies for a Cause, a lunch event that handed out cookies in exchange for registration to become an organ donor. Currently, there are countless misconceptions floating around the internet about becoming an organ donor. A common one is that medical professionals will not prioritize saving you in a life-threatening emergency if you are listed as an organ donor. However, this idea is false, as medical professionals are legally required to put their best effort into saving a patient’s life. Putting these misconceptions aside, SODA particularly focuses on eye and tissue donations. According to the Donor Alliance, even one tissue donor can potentially save and heal up to seventy-five lives. SODA has made it their mission to raise awareness for the life-saving ability of organ donations and encourage others to become organ donors themselves. If you are interested in activities like these, please visit SODA in Club A!
