We love that so many of our students choose to walk, scooter, or bike to school.  We have had some reports from our community members about the speed in which our students ride on sidewalks in downtown Alpharetta alongside the many pedestrians.

Our Alpharetta PD Liaison to Fulton County Schools Office Synder has provided the information below to keep our students and community members safe.  Thank you for speaking with your student to ensure safety and good community relations!

Here are some highlights, according to OCGA § 40-6-320:

• Scooters can be used on sidewalks where a 48-inch clear path is maintained for access for persons with disabilities.
• Scooters can be used on roadways where the speed limit is 35mph or less, but the rider shall travel in the same direction authorized for motor vehicle traffic.
  • If someone is going to ride on the roadway, and there is a bike lane, it is encouraged to use the bike lane.
• When using the sidewalk, scooter riders shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with, and shall yield the right of way to, persons traveling on foot.
• Speed
  • Scooters must travel at a speed of no greater than 20 miles per hour when upon a bicycle lane, shoulder, or roadway.
  • Scooters must travel at a speed of no greater than 7 miles per hour when upon a sidewalk.
• Age Requirements
  • Must be 16 years old to ride without restriction
  • May be under 16 years old IF wearing a helmet AND must use the sidewalk.
