Music comes in many different styles. From R&B to indie, there is a style for everyone to enjoy. Music is more than noise; it’s a message and often an escape from reality. Students listen to music for these reasons. Even with the controversy of music being a distraction, listening to music at the right place and the right time can have a number of benefits.

Music plays an important role in the lives of students, both inside and outside of school. Whether students are listening to music while studying, participating in band or choir, or simply enjoying music between classes, it can strongly influence their academic performance, emotions, and social development. Overall, music has a powerful effect on people.

One major way music impacts students is through academic performance. Many students listen to music while studying or doing homework because it can help them focus and stay motivated. Many people argue that it can be a distraction, but that outcome could be completely dependent on the student. Some students listen to instrumental or calm music to be productive. According to National University, studies have shown that music can improve memory and concentration by stimulating the brain, which helps students learn and memorize information. Additionally, students involved in music programs often develop strong discipline and time management skills, as playing an instrument requires consistency and dedication.

Sonya Patel (11) says ” I don’t listen to music much but when I do it’s very stress relieving, I think people listen to music for many reasons, whether that is to relax or express themselves, music is a part of everyone’s life whether we know it or not.

Music also has a strong emotional impact on students. School can be stressful due to exams, homework, and social pressures, and music often serves as a healthy coping mechanism. Often, even mental health professionals recommend music as a form of relaxation. Listening to music can reduce anxiety, improve mood, and help students manage stress. Different types of music can match different emotions, allowing students to express how they feel. Many students listen to music depending on the mood they are in.

Irene Thomas (11) says, “I enjoy listening to music; it helps me relax, but the type of music I listen to is completely dependent on my mood or how I feel at that moment. I’m usually listening to music in my free time, as it is stress-relieving.”

In addition to emotional benefits, music helps students socially. Listening to music can bring people together. It can be used as a conversation topic, as people can suggest and explain their favorite music and even find music that relates to them. Oftentimes, music is used to express oneself. When students find others with similar music taste, they can often relate to that person better. Participating in musical groups such as band and orchestra also brings people together, as it encourages teamwork and communication.
